On Sunday – Anna Chaplains, supporters and Diocesan representatives gathered at Winchester Cathedral to celebrate together the news that Winchester Diocese is entering into an official partnership with Anna Chaplaincy. It was a joyful and significant occasion celebrating the growth of Anna Chaplaincy across Hampshire.
Debbie Thrower spoke warmly about becoming the first Anna Chaplain in Alton in 2010, marking the beginning of what has become a remarkable movement. From those early beginnings, there are now nearly 500 Anna Chaplains serving communities across the country, offering spiritual support to older people, particularly those who may feel vulnerable, lonely, or frail.
The Diocese of Winchester has pledged its support for this vital ministry and is working towards the inspiring goal of appointing an Anna Chaplain in every benefice. This commitment reflects a deep recognition of the importance of pastoral and spiritual care for older generations.
The service of Evensong was both peaceful and uplifting. Around 50 Anna Chaplains gathered together including many of Caraway’s wonderful chaplains. Rhiannon King, Bishop of Southampton, spoke movingly about the unique and deeply valued role of Chaplains in offering compassionate presence and hope. She also highlighted the beautiful truth that there is no retirement age for being a Chaplain — a vocation rooted in lifelong calling and care.
This celebration marks more than a milestone; it signals a hopeful future. The momentum behind Anna Chaplaincy promises continued growth in compassionate, dedicated support for older people throughout Hampshire.
