Caraway and Portswood Dementia Action Group seek Dementia Friendly Volunteers to:
  • help host Memory Cafes across Southampton
  • make regular phone contact checking on the wellbeing of families living with dementia
Would you be able to give the gift of your time?

Families living with dementia have struggled with extended periods of isolation over the course of the pandemic. Across Southampton, both Memory Cafes and our Wellbeing Listening Service make a positive impact for people living with dementia. We would love to help more. However, our current team of volunteers are currently running at full ability, and we have more families living with dementia seeking support.

All volunteers for these projects receive training in both Dementia and communication.  This is specific to their level of volunteering. Both these services are looking for people who can give a little bit of time to help their community.

Memory Cafes:

Are a friendly safe place to meet regularly with other families living with dementia, somewhere to share and learn from your own and other’s experiences. There is no referral process, anyone with any memory difficulties is welcome.

Representatives from Southampton’s dementia services are regularly on hand to answer your queries.  Often this an admiral nurse or someone from carers in Southampton.  Alternating between events, offering their expertise to help solve any potential issues you may be experiencing.

At the cafes there is an occasional speaker along with plenty of time to talk to other carers and  volunteers. No café is complete without the opportunity for a cup of tea and some homemade cake. Hear all about the Memory Café Experience with this short video clip.

Wellbeing Calls for Dementia:

Our Wellbeing Volunteers for Dementia are matched with a family living with dementia to make contact via the phone on a regular basis. This can be weekly, fortnightly or monthly depending on the individual needs of the family living with dementia.

Dementia friendly volunteers are specially trained to befriend, listen and support families living with dementia with friendship and signposting.  Offering an additional layer of support through friendship, and when appropriate, they are on hand to highlight potential additional needs to relevant agencies.

If you would like to learn more check out our “Why Volunteer for the WV4D project” Video.  Where our very own Ros Simpson and two of our current volunteers have contributed to this overview of what is involved.

We would love to chat and are always happy to discuss any of our volunteering opportunities. If you are interested, please email us on caraway@caraway.uk.com, we would welcome hearing from you.
