Caraway hosts A Taste of Summer

Caraway hosts A Taste of Summer, starting the month of July with a burst of holiday joy and a twist of sun intervals.

Back in the depths of February and Lockdown, the Caraway volunteer army felt it would be fun to start this month with a celebration of summer.  Over 200 people from across Southampton signed up to join us in our Holiday.  With each participant receiving a hand-delivered activity pack, afternoon tea and an invite to a virtual zoom gathering for anyone wanting to join in.

The planning sessions started, ideas quickly gathered to create another interesting and fun filled summer themed activity pack.  Our delivery volunteers collected the Goodie bags for delivery throughout the morning.  Many joining, enjoyed a COVID Safe doorstep catch up.  There were more friendly faces joining in with our afternoon virtual summer excursion.  This time, now restrictions have eased a little, many gathered in smaller socially distance parties in the gardens of friends.  Enjoying the afternoon tea and mocktail recipes provided in the goodie bag.

Each bag contained a varied mix of information, crafts, puzzles and activities.  To highlight a few of the item’s included…
  • Craft kits to create a seaside themed picture frame, fan
  • Butterfly spotting and puzzles
  • Articles on gardens, RNLI, steam trains & staying cool in hot weather
  • Memories from our volunteering army about being at the seaside
  • Homemade Sweet and savoury treats to eat
  • And even a postcard to send a loved one

With local garden attractions of Exbury Gardens, Hilliers Gardens and Furzey Gardens each providing information, vouchers and even the odd free entry ticket.  Check your bag, were you chosen at random to receive a ticket for free entry?  We cannot thank the generosity and kindness of these local venues enough.

Please join us to continue our summer festivities with our Celebration of Summer service, at Highfield Church, on Wednesday 21st July at 11am.

Thank you’s!

As a team we thought we might have less people this time, but we broke our record once again and gave out over 40 bags more than last time.

Of course, this event would not be possible without the team of 33 people.  We are so grateful that they make it happen in one way or another and without their baking, compiling craft kits, gathering information and delivering packs, we would be unable to host an event like this.  Many of you know Jo Ladkin who organised this event. Jo commented…

“We are so blessed at Caraway with a team of wonderful volunteers, who willing give up their time to make it all happen and with this event it’s even more wonderful when we have a team that spans the city, bringing  us all together with a common goal.

May you have been blessed by this event as we hope all those who received a gift bag will be blessed.”

Thoughts from our community…

Some thank you comments have already come in:

“A BIG thankyou to Everyone who had a hand in this afternoon’s Tea.  My friends and I really enjoyed the yummy food and we had fun doing the two quizzes. I made up the mocktail recipe, which we had later in the afternoon.”

“Delighted with delivery. It is always presented beautifully, and I appreciate it.”
