In Celebration of Summer

Highfield Church, 21 July 2021

Creator God who breathed this world into being, who is discernible within the harmony of nature, the perfection of a butterfly’s wing, the grandeur of a mountain range, the soaring eagle and humming bird, thank you for this world which you have created. Thank you for summer sun, which reminds us that your creative breath is still alive and active. Thank you for the warmth of your love, sustaining this world. www.faithandworship.com
Today Caraway was delighted to host In Celebration of Summer service.  On an extremely hot summer morning, with July’s flowers in full bloom.  We continued the sunny excitement created from our A Taste of Summer virtual event earlier this month.  Also celebrating the return of actual singing at an in-person service after a long vacation from it.

As everyone arrived, they signed in and found a seat with a little blue bag sat on it.  After being assured that they would need these lovely little bags during the service.  Beautifully put together they had ribbons tied to their handles.  These were used to participate in the beautiful ribbon dancing throughout the four hymns sung through out the service.  We are thankful for Eleanor from Ways to Move leading the wonderful ribbon dancing.

Isaiah 43:18-21 – New International Version

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.
See, I am doing a new thing!

Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.
The wild animals honour me, the jackals and the owls, because I provide water in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland,
to give drink to my people, my chosen, the people I formed for myself that they may proclaim my praise.”

The return of singing to the joyful hymns throughout the service was an emotive process for many of the congregation.  Even though we sang with our masks on, at a social distance, the jubilation felt was magnificent.

The themes of gardens and dragonflies wove their way through the service in the form of prayers, readings, and reflections.  This

culminated in the final prayer, employing a piece of garden twine

as a prayer rope.  So simple and yet a powerful expression of the joys of that summer brings, even without the

usual freedoms we all enjoy.

What better way to close the In Celebration of Summer service with a glass of sparkling elderflower and an ice cream?

“Life is like an ice cream cone on a hot summers day; enjoy it before it melts away”  Unknown
